Car Parking Monitoring to Launch at Plympton Health Centre

To help improving patient access to parking, Pathfields Medical Group is pleased to announce that, from the 1st November 2026, Smart Parking will begin monitoring the car park at Plympton Health Centre.

Smart Parking will be responsible for all parking monitoring and management. The introduction of this service follows feedback from patients, many of whom have raised concerns about difficulties finding available parking spaces when attending appointments.

By helping to ensure that parking spaces are used appropriately, the new system aims to improve access for patients and visitors, making it easier for those with appointments to find a space when they arrive.

To support the new arrangements, four Smart Parking check-in tablets will be installed at Plympton Health Centre:

· Two tablets will be located next to the patient appointment check-in screens.

· Two tablets will be available at the reception desk.

Patients and visitors will be able to use these tablets to register their vehicle details during their visit.

We appreciate that changes to parking arrangements can take some time to become familiar with, and our teams will be on hand to help patients understand the new process during the implementation period. Further information about the Smart Parking system, can be found here: Leading Car Park Management Solutions | Smart Parking

Thank you for your support as we continue to make improvements that help ensure our patients can access care more easily and conveniently.

Helpful Patient Information Q&A’s

1. How is this being financed?

Answer: There is no cost to the practice. All equipment, installation, and associated setup costs are fully funded and covered by Smart Parking, meaning there is no financial investment required from the practice.

2. If a patient accidentally enters an incorrect vehicle registration, will they receive a parking charge?

Answer: Possibly. Smart Parking can identify minor keying errors, such as when a single character has been entered incorrectly, which helps reduce the risk of a parking charge being issued for a simple typing mistake.

However, if more than one character is entered incorrectly, this is usually classed as a major keying error and may result in a parking charge being issued. If you believe you have made a mistake when entering your vehicle registration, we recommend contacting Smart Parking directly as soon as possible.

3. Does this new system not cause more anxiety for a patient, especially the elderly having to enter a registration as well as appointment details?

Answer: We recognise that any change can feel daunting for some patients, particularly those who may be less confident using digital systems. We will provide as much support as possible to help patients use the new parking system. We are aware of other local GP practices that have successfully introduced similar systems with positive outcomes. We will continue to monitor feedback and make improvements where needed to ensure the system is as accessible and user-friendly as possible.

4. Will there be a maximum stay time?

Answer: Yes. The parking system will operate with a maximum stay of two hours. However, we recognise that there may be exceptional circumstances where patients need to remain on site for longer, such as while waiting for an ambulance or receiving extended medical care. In these situations, the stay time can be reviewed and adjusted where appropriate to ensure patients are not unfairly penalised.

5. If I’m dropped off/picking up, will I still need to register the car or is there a grace period (say 5 mins)?

Answer: No. Vehicles that are simply dropping off or collecting patients will not need to be registered. A grace period will be in place, as required under IPC regulations, to allow sufficient time for vehicles to enter and leave the site without incurring a parking charge. This means patients and carers can be dropped off or picked up without needing to register their vehicle.

6. Will parking remain free for patients attending appointments?

Answer: Yes. Parking will remain free of charge for patients attending appointments. The purpose of introducing this system is to help ensure parking spaces are available for patients and visitors who need them. We will not receive any income or financial benefit from this project.

7. What are the parking restrictions hours?

Answer: The parking restrictions will be in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24/7). This helps ensure that parking spaces remain available for patients, visitors, and authorised users at all times.

8. Does this include disabled bays?

Answer: Yes. The parking management system will apply to all parking areas across the site, including disabled bays. Patients using disabled bays will still be able to park in these spaces when eligible, but the same parking registration requirements will apply.

9. Does this include the staff car park?

Answer: Yes. The parking management system will apply to all parking areas on site, including the staff car park. This helps ensure that parking is managed consistently across the entire site.

10. Can I leave my car there to get a prescription on the ridgeway?

Answer: If you are collecting a prescription that has been issued following a consultation at the practice, this would be permitted. However, the car park is intended for patients and visitors accessing services on site and is not intended for general parking while visiting the Ridgeway. One of the key aims of the parking management system is to ensure that parking spaces remain available for patients who need to access healthcare services.
